This hardy decorative houseplant, formerly called Pleomele reflexa, is native to Madigascar, Mauritius, and other islands of the Indian Ocean.
The song of India plant was used in NASA’s clean air study which proved to remove a considerable amount of toxins from the environment. It is widely grown as an ornamental plant and houseplant, valued for its richly colored, evergreen leaves, and thick, irregular stems.
Easily grown in consistently moist to wet soils in full sun. Tolerates light shade, but performs best in full sun. Tolerates heavy soils. Needs ample moisture, but also does surprisingly well in slightly moist soils that do not dry out.
